Strengths & Natural Talents - The Empowered Woman Challenge, Part 2

/ October 19, 2020

The first challenge on the journey to empowerment and limitless confidence was to answer the question, "Who am I?"  boldly, bravely, and with brutal honesty.

The next challenge continues to explore our self-identity by asking, "What are your strengths and natural talents?"

Identifying, embracing, and maximizing our strengths and natural talents allows our authentic self to shine!

You probably realize that we all have natural talents and specific strengths, but if you've never asked yourself what yours are, you might be surprised to find it can be a difficult question to answer!

That's because we tend to focus more on our weaknesses and what we think we can't do, than our strengths and what we know we can do.

Giving so much attention (and power) to what we find lacking in ourselves is a well-paved road to poor self-esteem. Instead, we must take the bumpier road less traveled and lean into our strengths and unique talents--in both life and business--to build the limitless self-confidence of the Empowered Woman.

So, where do we begin?

If you're not sure what your strengths and natural talents are, you're not alone. It took me, and my team, several days to identify ours. Thankfully, we found some tricks and tools that helped!

1 - Ask family and/or trusted friends. Write down everything they toss your way, even if you're not 100% convinced it's a strength/talent you actually possess. They often see things in you that you don't recognize on your own. This will provide you with a general list of strengths and talents to build on.

2 - Add anything you see in yourself that they failed to mention. Family and friends often focus on the things that come to their mind first, which may or may not be the same things that come to your mind first! For this exercise, it's important to toot your own horn. Loudly. Don't skip over something you feel you possess just because no one else mentioned it!

3 - Get specific. Once you have a general sense of what your strengths and talents are, ask yourself the following questions:
  • What are you great at?
  • What work/activity gives you the most joy?
  • What talents and strengths were you utilizing the last time you felt "on fire" or "in the zone"?

4 - Use free online tests that help point you in the right direction. The Myers-BriggsEnneagramBig Five, and High Five tests are all great places to start.

Okay, we have a list … Now what?

♥ Embrace your strengths and natural talents!

Thanks to social media it's never been easier to constantly compare ourselves to others. But, wishing you had the strengths or talents possessed and presented by others will never serve your best interests. The sad truth is, we're often comparing our authentic self to someone else's manufactured, chosen persona.

Social media isn't a great judge of character or measure of comparison. Just saying.

Your strengths and natural talents are what makes you unique, authentic, and beautiful. And how you genuinely share that with others is different than the way anyone else does. According to Gallup (the creators of the Strengths Finder Assessment), the likelihood of your top strengths and natural talents being an exact match to someone else's is one in 33.4 million. Read that again!

That makes each of us pretty unique, which is pretty awesome if you ask me.

FOCUS ON BEING YOU … BECAUSE YOU ARE ONE OF A KIND.

♥ Once you have identified and embraced your strengths and natural talents, you're ready to exercise and express them every chance you get. Whatever your endeavors are, allow your strengths and talents to support them. The more you lean into them and learn to trust that they can help you face any challenge and solve any problem that comes your way, the stronger they (and you) will become.

That is how you shine. That is how you show your best self to others. That is how you build limitless confidence. And that is how you become an Empowered Woman.

My
Top 5 Strengths & Natural Talents:

EMPATHIZER

Your objective is to be empathetic to others' emotions. No one can step into the others' shoes better than you - it comes so naturally to you. You might not agree with every perspective and emotion, but most importantly you are able to understand what the person is going though. It allows you to have personalized approach to everyone, to see their differences and specialties, to include them and to treat fairly. Naturally, it draws others to you, as you know exactly how they feel. In a team, such a strength based on kindness can be essential for mitigating conflicts by making sure all team members are aware of each other's emotions and challenges.

THINKER

Your objective is to think. Some get excited by exercising their biceps or triceps, you - by stretching your 'brain muscles' through deep thinking. It does not necessarily mean you are a very focused person. It just means you enjoy the mental activity and meaningful conversations. For your mind journeys, you perceive yourself as the best companion. This introspection allows you to digest complex information and ideas before communicating about it with the surrounding world. Who wouldn't like to have a team member who can simplify even most sophisticated concepts in a way that a 3-year-old would understand?

TIME KEEPER

Your objective is to set timelines and deadlines. Because of your dislike of surprises, you love to plan. You don't necessarily need to control everything and everyone, but there must be order and predictability in the world around you. You unconsciously impose the structure onto everything by setting up routines, timelines and deadlines. If you set up plans, you make sure you follow them through thoroughly. Your need for structure becomes very useful in a team or a project since you can bring order and discipline to maintain progress and productivity.

OPTIMIST

Your objective is to bring positive spirit. If there is someone believing that the glass is half-full instead of half-empty - then it's you. Whether it's a work project or a daily situation - you always manage to find a way to make everything more exciting. You inject enthusiasm into people and that's why they love to be around with you. Sure, there are people who don't buy your positivity - but could it set you back? No way! Your optimism simply would not allow it! In a team environment, you are generous with praise, grateful for people and circumstances, and quick to find positive in every situation, which is key in motivating people and mitigating conflicts.

BRAINSTORMER

Your objective is to come up with new concepts and ideas. It's not even your objective - it's your way of life. You are constantly on the lookout to connect unconnectable things and to find new perspectives on familiar challenges. Whenever a new idea comes into your mind, you literally lit up like a light bulb. New angles, approaches and perspectives no matter how contrary or bizarre give you an endless source of energy. As the result, the others might see you as an innovative person willing to turn the world around and resort to you if they need some 'out of the box' ideas. You are a clear source of creative juices in any team.

This month, I initiated a daily challenge with my team designed to help them overcome fear and self-doubt while discovering their authentic self, defining their purpose, reigniting their passions, and tapping into their unlimited potential. The goal is to gain limitless confidence and happiness in both business and life.

It is a journey of self-awareness and self-development, but most importantly, it is a journey of empowerment.

I try to lead by example, so I knew I'd take and complete each challenge alongside my team. What I didn't know, is just how much I still have left to learn, uncover, and discover about myself.

We just completed Week One. It has been such a powerful experience that I've decided to share it here. If you could benefit from a little self-discovery, use some help figuring out how to create the life you desire versus the life you are living, and tapping into your own potential and unlimited confidence … read on!

The first challenge involved a self-identity exercise that asked us to answer the question, "Who Are You?" boldly, bravely, and with brutal honesty.

I posed the challenge question to my team and then got to work myself. I began by jotting down the traits and qualities that I believe define "me". About mid-way through my pondering and listing, I realized something. I was listing qualities from an article about Strong Women that I'd kept tucked away in my Personal Dreams & Goals journal. They were qualities that I've always admired and longed to claim as my own, but never truly thought I would.

I hope my team got as much out of that first exercise as I did. It was enlightening. And, more importantly, empowering. It set the stage for all future exercises. I'm excited for each new challenge to see what I'll uncover and discover next!

In answer to the question, "Who Are You?" …

This. This is who I am.

The woman who faces every challenge. She stands up for herself, and others, and refuses to stay silent in the face of abuse.

The woman who doesn't depend on anyone else. She isn't afraid of failure and trusts herself to handle her own financial, emotional, mental, and physical well-being.

The woman whose self-love game is on-point. She knows practice makes "almost" perfect and she's able to look past perceived flaws to work on improving real ones.

The woman who understands that kindness and compassion aren’t signs of weaknesses, but of great strength. She views them as opportunities to connect with others and make the world a brighter place.

The woman who doesn't view other women as a threat. She lifts them up, offers unconditional love and support, and rejoices in their successes knowing that it doesn't diminish her own achievements.

The woman who trusts her intuition and doesn’t listen to any voice but her own. She recognizes her journey and stays the course because no one knows better than she does what she truly wants and needs in life.

The woman who knows it takes enormous strength and incredible courage to put herself out there. She fearlessly allows herself to be vulnerable, speak her mind, show emotion, and share her feelings.

The woman who doesn't let the opinions of others influence her. She doesn't allow rejection, criticism, judgment, or negativity from anyone to limit her potential or hold her back.

The woman who unapologetically reinvents herself as often as necessary. She owns who she is, does whatever it takes to be her very best, follows her heart, and knows the way to her true North.

The woman who never quits challenging herself to be better, no matter how many tries it takes. She believes in progress, not perfection, and her own inner strength and ability to do hard things.

The woman who owns her successes and believes in herself. She is proud of her wins, trusts her abilities, and refuses to minimize her achievements. She'll never make herself look small for the sake of allowing others to feel bigger.

The woman who knows exactly what it will take to reach her goals, as well as what is keeping her from reaching them. She knows when she needs to push herself, but also knows when to walk away.

The woman who understands the true definition of fearlessness. She works hard to overcome her fears, but when she can't, she shows up anyway and does it scared. Because she refuses to let fear stop her from reaching her goals or fulfilling her dreams.

The woman who is truly happy and knows what it takes to make her own happiness. She realizes happiness is a choice and a state of well-being that takes constant practice and comes from positive mental strength.

The woman who is a bold combination of passion, self-respect, wisdom, tact, timing, strength, gentleness, and bravery.

I've always admired these women. I never expected to be one.

But here I am … killing it. And I've never felt more empowered.

This is who I am. I've worked hard to be this woman.

I'm very proud of her. And, I'm so thankful for the opportunity that helped me uncover my own inner confidence and outer radiance, but I'm even more thankful for the opportunity to help others do the same. ❤

What about you? Who are you?

Hello & Welcome!

My Gram-ma told me this parable when I was a child and it stuck. She was truly the most giving, selfless, and loving woman I've ever known. She passed the importance of kindness and love down to her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.

One day, an old man was walking along a beach that was littered with thousands of starfish that had been washed ashore by the high tide.

As he walked he came upon a young boy who was eagerly throwing the starfish back into the ocean, one by one.

Puzzled, the man looked at the boy and asked what he was doing.

Without looking up from his task, the boy simply replied, “I’m saving these starfish, Sir”.

The old man chuckled aloud, “Son, there are thousands of starfish and only one of you. What difference can you make?”

The boy picked up a starfish, gently tossed it into the water and turning to the man, said, “I made a difference to that one!”

I've lived by this parable. Even though I might not be able to make a huge difference to everyone, for at least one person, I can make some small difference that could mean the world to them. And that's what it is all about.

So, THANK YOU to everyone who has already joined me in the April Showers of Kindness and Love Challenge at Country Fried Crazy. I know to others what we're doing might seem small in the grand scheme of things … but if we can each make a difference to just "one" on our own … think of all the good we can do together! That's huge, friends. So, thank you. Thank you. Thank you. From the bottom of my heart. Thank you!
